This weekend, I was once again raving about the Poisoner’s Handbook and realized that I had never written about it here. Time to remedy that.
Where to start? I’m not really super-sciencey, but the author (Deborah Blum, a Pulitzer prize winner) makes even the delightfully icky bits accessible. The determination and dedication of the scientists highlighted was inspiring and the individual accounts that the she used to highlight each poison was fascinating. The chapter that sticks in my mind the most is the one on the Radium Girls; I’m not surprised there is a play about their lives.
We’ll see if this is my book of the year…
