a quote from my uncle
“At the other end of Grand Isle, just as you get off the bridge, you are greeted by a permanent sign in big, bold letters: ‘Jesus Christ Reigns Over Grand Isle.’ We looked around the tent for him, but he must have been out fishing; after all, he hung out a lot with fishermen.”
Grand Isle is a barrier island off the coast of Louisiana.
Kate Chopin’s the Awakening is partially set there.

While I’m being all Jesus-y
My favorite bumber sticker in Asheville:
Jesus is Coming!
I just realized that I needed to call home and ask LEM a question. But I started dialing my parents number instead of mine.
Then again, I have talked to my mother several times today. I brought her about 20 pounds of peaches from a roadside stand in South Carolina and she keeps calling me with recipes to approve. Yummm

Overheard this evening…
“It’s great in the way that movies that aren’t good are great, like orange creme soda.”
documentary – must see
LEM & I just got back from going to see Make it Funky, a documentary on New Orleans music that will be coming out on DVD in the September. I couldn’t believe how many of the bands that are featured in the film that I’ve actually seen live. I can thank my parents love of 50s New Orleans R&B for some of that.
Keith Richards is interviewed about his love for NO music. I couldn’t help but see Jack Sparrow instead. He got up on stage with Allen Toussaint’s band and played and old Fats Domino song. I thought he was going to fall over.
I wonder what non-New Orleanians will think. ordinarywhirled, you’ll have to add it as #299 on your NetFlix queue and tell me what you think.
My favorite quote from LEM: “Walter Wolfman Washington sure sounds different when he sings with his teeth in.”

The Prelinger Archives is the greatest! Thanks, dial_m for sending me the link.
It has cool Mardi Gras footage from the 40s. But my favorite is Perversion for Profit, Pt.1 & 2 – Anti-pornography film produced by financier Charles Keating, linking pornography to the Communist conspiracy and the decline of Western civilization.
There is also a bike safety film featuring riders in monkey masks who are all killed in terrible ways (off-screen) for disobeying the rules of the road.

When in doubt take matters into your own hands…
A couple of weeks ago I was driving home on Broad St. near the pumping station. It was pretty clear that something had gone really wrong with water pipes under the street. Water was bubbling up in the left lane and junks of asphalt were spread around the hole.
So the hole which has only gotten larger and although barricades/orange cones/tape has been erected, it keeps getting knocked down. Somebody has put up a large neatly handwritten sign that says, “Huge hole this lane. Beware!”
Gotta love the community spirit.

So I’m compulsively re-arranging my dining room/library/office which involves moving bookshelves, which involves removing all of the books. I am also trying to be less acquisitive and actually cull some of the books from my collection.
It’s funny; some books, I just look at them and I can even remember where I bought them; others I can’t remember anything about them, not a plot line, a character, nothing. These are the books most likely to be donated to the local public library’s friends sale.
I am also amazed at how my preferences have evolved, or in the case of brain candy not evolved.
My idiot new neighbors just started shooting off fireworks. Poor Sienna acted like she had been shot and dashed under the bed. Which is where I should be…

on the road again–
I’m deserting NOLA once again for the mountains. But this time instead of the Blue Ridge, I’ll be heading up to the Catskills. LEM has worked a music festival at a ski resort every August for maybe 7 or 8 years. I missed going last year and it was tough to make it through August without a break.
I can’t wait. I just have to get through working until midnight tonight.
It’s almost 9 p.m. and there are only 5 people in the entire 3 story library. Oh well, I guess it’s better than having to be here and there being no one in the library.

Many comments on my vacation, but it all has to wait. Brother #4 picked me up at the airport to let me know that my Paran had passed away the night before. Now technically, he wasn’t really my Paran (godfather), but the Paran of brother #1, but it’s what we all called him. He was the husband of my Dad’s only sister.
Paran had been fighting prostate cancer for over 5 years. And he put up a really good battle, but in the last couple of months it was really clear that he was just getting too tired.
I thought about what we were doing up in Wyndam, NY around the time he passed. If he zoomed by us, he would have enjoyed the party…crazy Irishmen and doing shots of leprechaun piss (something I don’t recommend). LEM won’t be home for the funeral which I think is going to be Wednesday.

I love those Target/Baby Got Backpack ads way too much. I’ll stop everytime and sometimes I even get up and do a little dance. And I think of ordinarywhirled every time.
About the funeral-
What I love about getting together with my extended family (and I do mean extended because I have all sorts of pseudo-cousins) is all the characters in one place.
And the great names: Otto, Norwood, Norbert, Shelby Lynne (who wants to be a librarian when she grows up), Totsie.
It was great that such a large crowd came out.
What I don’t love is the upswell in family tension from simmering arguments. And the fact that one of my pseudo-cousins (by marriage, we’re not actually related at all) was hitting on me at a FUNERAL.

I grow weary of the storm coverage as usual. And what’s up with the L&O: SVU marathon? It’s making me feel dirty.
I’ve moved most of my plants and picked up the crap from my yard. I’m waiting until tomorrow to shutter the front windows and move the plants off the porch.
I hope LEM makes it home from DC. His plane is supposed to land at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. It would suck if it gets cancelled.
I’m about to head out and attempt to gas up the car. The lines were terrible earlier, but I hope that they’re better at night.

Eric & I are staying at his Aunt & Uncle’s house in Iberville Parish. We’ve heard general reports about our neighborhoods but nothing specific. We’re praying for the best but expecting the worst.
At least our families are safe…
More when I have a chance.
