Arty Tuesday – African American Art – Edmonia Lewis

Death of Cleopatra – Edmonia Lewis (1876)

I was feeling blah about the obvious choices for art for February…love, hearts, romance, etc. And then I thought what about celebrating Black History Month (oh hey, it’s now called African American History Month because that rolls off the tongue).

  1. Edmonia Lewis was the most controversial sculptor of her day. Why? Few had ever heard of a “woman sculptor,” let alone a sculptor of color. Many believed it was not possible! Decades later Henry James dismissed her as trading on her color, but today her work is treasured by great museums and avid collectors.
