Arty Tuesday – Advertisements by Waldmuller

Since I was inspired by the Picasso last week, I’m continuing the advertisement theme throughout the month. While searching I came across this neo-classical foursome. Interesting since the artist is more associated with Romanticism than Neo-Classicism.

Four shop signs (Hygieia, Hippocrates, Galen and Fauna)
for the pharmacy, The Golden Lion in Josefstadt by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1826)

Hygieia was the goddess of health; Hippocrates is a historical physician; Galen was another early physician whose theories influenced treatment for 1000 years; and Fauna was a Roman deity and prophetess. All very appropriate for a neo-classical pharmacy.
